Sapphire Pilates is a space for exploration — of movement, of healing, and of the art of facilitation.

A sapphire is a precious gemstone that naturally occurs in a variety of colors. It’s often associated with wisdom as well as mental clarity, intuition, and joy. At Sapphire Pilates, we strive to create an environment where students and teachers alike can cultivate a mindful movement practice, encouraging each being to lean into the wisdom of their own selves.

Justine Malick

Founder & Lead Teacher Trainer

Justine is inspired by movement and the body. Her teaching and holistic approach to this work is anchored by her desire to share movement tools that facilitate a sense of ease inside and out. Justine strives to bring a tenderness and strength to the work, acknowledging that all movement – even the most dynamic, challenging exercises – can simultaneously also be nurturing and nourishing. The birth of Sapphire Pilates was inspired by Justine’s dream to create an inclusive space to teach, to practice, to cultivate community.

Born and raised in LA, she was a competitive figure skater for over a decade. Pilates came into her life at a very young age, and it was an integral part of her off-ice training. Over the years, Justine has completed trainings through Body Arts Science International (BASI), YogaWorks, and Embodied Flow. She has also studied Somatics, Body Mind Centering (BMC), Deep Bodywork Massage, Resistance Flexibility Strength Training (RFST), Chinese Medicine, and Prenatal/Postpartum Corrective Exercise (PPCES). Over the course of the past decade plus, Justine has spent time teaching in Santa Barbara, Melbourne, AUS, and LA.

Annie grew up in Orange County. After running into some complicated health issues, she began dancing at the age of 7 to improve her health and mobility. She immediately fell in love with the artistry, movement, and expression of the body. Annie went on to perform competitive dance for 10 years and even taught dance during her college years. After graduating with a degree in Communications, Annie started taking pilates classes for fun with a close friend. She found parallels between dance and pilates, and she loved the similar flow of movements as well as the fun community that came along with it. Pilates has brought immense joy to her life, and in 2021, Annie completed her comprehensive pilates training through The Lab with Justine Malick. To further expand her knowledge of the body and movement, Annie is now in the process of obtaining her 200-hr yoga certification.

Tenets of the Sapphire Pilates approach to movement.

Wisdom

Through an integrative movement practice, connect with the innate, inner-knowing that is the wisdom of your own body.

Breath

The breath gives birth to the movement, and working with the breath has a powerful impact upon our physiology.

Nourishment

All movement can be nourishing. It can be dynamic and vigorous yet simultaneously also be gentle and healing.

Discernment

To discern is to cultivate an ability to see things as they truly are. This added insight yields a sense of ease.

Somatics

Somatics is an exploration of how consciousness inhabits the body — the soma. This is where we begin.

Longevity

Practicing movement that incorporates tenderness and strength is choosing a path that enables you to keep moving.

Lean into into the wisdom of your own body.
